Chidiyatapu — literally “Bird Island” in Hindi — is the southernmost point of South Andaman Island, located about 25 km from Port Blair. It is best known as the finest sunset point in Port Blair, but it is much more than that: a thick mangrove forest, a rocky beach, rich birdlife, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that is increasingly hard to find near a capital city.
The view at Chidiyatapu is not just a beach sunset — it is a sunset over a horizon of mangroves, rock formations, and small offshore islands, with the water turning from gold to crimson to deep purple. It is widely regarded as the most photogenic sunset location in the Andaman Islands after Radhanagar Beach.
The forests around Chidiyatapu are home to the Andaman wood pigeon, Andaman serpent eagle, and several endemic species. Early mornings are best for birdwatching. Birding groups often make the journey specifically for this site.
25 km from Port Blair, approximately 40 minutes by road. Most tour operators include Chidiyatapu as an afternoon add-on after sightseeing in Port Blair. Arrive by 4:30 PM to secure a good spot before sunset.
