After sunset, you paddle through the dark waters of Havelock’s mangrove creeks and open bays where microscopic marine organisms light up an electric blue-green glow with every stroke of your paddle.

What Causes It

The glow is produced by dinoflagellates — single-celled marine plankton that emit light when disturbed. In the calm, nutrient-rich waters around Havelock, concentrations are high enough to produce a spectacular effect.

The Experience

You paddle in a sit-on-top kayak with an expert guide through designated routes. No torches are used — the bioluminescence is best seen in complete darkness. The water around your paddle glows, fish leave streaks of blue light as they dart away, and your wake lights up like a moving constellation.

Best Conditions

New moon nights offer the strongest glow. The activity runs October through April. Moonlit nights reduce visibility of the effect.
