Snorkelling at Elephant Beach is widely regarded as the best snorkelling experience available in the Andaman Islands without a scuba certification. The shallow coral gardens here — just 1–3 metres below the surface — host an extraordinary diversity of marine life in crystal-clear water with visibility regularly exceeding 15 metres. The beach itself is a pristine crescent of white sand flanked by dense tropical forest, making it as beautiful above water as it is below.
Clownfish (Nemo!) in anemones, giant parrotfish, surgeonfish, moorish idols, sea turtles, and occasionally blacktip reef sharks in the deeper sections. The coral coverage at Elephant Beach is among the healthiest in the Andamans. You may also spot blue-ringed angelfish, pufferfish, and schools of silver fusiliers darting through the reef. Lucky visitors have reported eagle rays gliding through the deeper edges of the bay. The anemone beds are particularly dense here, often hosting multiple clownfish families within metres of each other — a favourite moment for underwater photographers.
Option 1 — Speedboat: A 15-minute speedboat ride from Havelock Jetty. Faster and more convenient for families. Shared boats depart at fixed intervals throughout the morning, while private charters can be arranged for greater flexibility. Most operators begin their first run at 8:00 AM.
Option 2 — Trekking: A 45-minute jungle trail through dense forest — recommended for adventure seekers. Note that the trail can be slippery after rain. The path winds through native rainforest and offers glimpses of indigenous bird species, making the trek itself a rewarding experience. Wear sturdy footwear and carry water. The trail is not recommended during or immediately after heavy monsoon showers.
Snorkelling equipment (mask, fins, life jacket) is available for rent at the beach. Complimentary snorkelling is included in most Andaman Vista packages that include an Elephant Beach visit. Trained guides accompany all snorkelling groups and are stationed in the water to assist beginners and ensure no one ventures beyond the safe snorkelling zone. GoPro cameras and underwater housings are also available for rent at a nominal charge for those who wish to capture their experience.
